Tadalafil is a medication taken before sexual activity that helps men with erectile dysfunction (ED) achieve and maintain an erection. Tadalafil is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland. Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is a condition in which a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse. This can result from medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate problems, and heart disease, or it can be a side effect of medications commonly used to treat these conditions. Personal lifestyle factors, such as stress, alcohol, and tobacco use, can also play a role. During surgery or radiation to the pelvic area (including prostate, bladder, and rectal procedures), damage to the nerves supplying blood to the penis can occur.
